He married Alice Beatrice PHILPOTT abt. 01 September 1904 in Poole District, Dorset, England. He died 11 May 1929 in Rhio, Dutch East Indies. Alice Beatrice PHILPOTT, daughter of James PHILPOTT and Hannah CHALK , was born bet. October and December, 1875 in Kinson, Dorset, England. She died October 1941 in Wimbledon, London, England.

James lead a somewhat chequered life and was accused of the murder of one of his staff at the plantation he managed. He was himself murdered in 1929 by a number of Chinese workers on the plantation on the island of Rhio in the Dutch East Indies. His granddaughter Priscilla has provided the following details from a cutting taken from the Bournemouth Star newspaper (date unknown):

CHINESE MURDER A BRITON
Manager of a Rubber Estate
Singapore. Wednesday
Mr James William Futcher, the British manager of a Chinese-owned rubber and pineapple estate on the island of Rhio, has been murdered by a crowd of Chinese. They were armed with Parangs.
Eight arrests have been made by the Dutch police. - Reuter.

Rhio is a small island, forming part of the Dutch East Indies. It is situated to the south-east of Singapore. A "Parang" is a Malay heavy sheath knife

Briton's Fate in East Indies at Hands of Gang of Chinese
SINGAPORE, Wednesday.
Mr. James' William Futcher, the British manager of a Chinese-owned rubber and pineapple estate on the island of Rhio, has been brutally murdered by a crowd of Chinese armed with parangs. From The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser (1884-1942), 16 May 1929:
Planter Murdered in Rhio.
The death under shocking circumstances is reported of Mr. James William Futcher who left Singapore less than a year ago to take charge of Eastbourne Estate, Rhio. It is stated he was attacked by a large band of Chinese near his bungalow on the afternoon of May 11th and, terribly mutilated, his body was found later with about 30 wounds, and the right hand missing. The same night a Chinese squatter confessed to the murder.
The funeral is taking place in Singapore this morning at Bidadari at 9.30.
