Arthur was born 13 August 1899 at Small Heath, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, the son of William Thomas Knibbs from Sheldon, Birmingham. He is pictured here on his wedding day 7 April 1928 when he married Violet Burrows.

Arthur and Violet continued to live in Birmingham all of their married lives and had three children, Joan, Barbara and Brian.
