Elsie Estella ROOT

b. 1902

Elsie was the granddaughter of Orville Root who married Ann Knibbs. She wasn't related by blood to the Knibbs family but nevertheless, very closely connected. I don't know a great deal about Elsie except that she was born in 1902 in Meriden, Connecticut, USA and in August 1928, she left Meriden and sailed to India for an onward journey to Burma where she worked as a Missionary at the American Baptist Mission Girls' School at a place named Kemmendine.

We know this from a letter she wrote to her mother on 28 October 1928 telling of her experiences at the school. The letter was published in the local press at Meriden headed "Young Meriden Woman Who Left Last August To Teach In Burmese School". (Click to see the newspaper article)

A copy of the newspaper article was found by Shirley Walter in a scrap book which belonged to her grandfather, Howard Ernest Roberts. Howard was Ann Knibbs' son from her first marriage.
