The California Arms, Belmont, Surrey c.1900 |
The California Arms was built in about 1859 by Pelton
Gibbons' father, John Gibbons, and then extended in 1900. We don't know
the exact dates for when Pelton and his wife Hannah ran it, but from
various census returns, I would guess that it was from the mid-1890's,
for around 10-20 years. Hannah Gibbons was born at St James' Farm, Clifton, Oxfordshire, the daughter of Thomas Wright and his wife Sarah Knibbs. Hannah and my grandfather, Levi George Knibbs, were 1st cousins. The Gibbons family owned several properties in Belmont, including the General Stores and Post Office just a couple of doors away from the pub, which was run by a man named William Brain who married Hannah's younger sister, Mary Anne Wright. |
