Ellen (Knibbs) SMITH, Abt.1850-1947

Ellen KNIBBS was born in about 1850 in Old Windsor, Berkshire, the eighth of ten children born to John Knibbs and Mary Roake. She married James Smith in 1869 and we know they were living in Vine Cottage, the left hand of the two cottages above at 10 Straight Road, Old Windsor. The right hand cottage is named Abbey Cottage.
The entire building is Grade II listed due to its special architectural interest. The building dates from the early 19th century, constructed of stock brick in Flemish bond with low pitched, hipped, slate roof. It's a 2 storey building with 2 chimneys with clay pots. Paired brackets to eaves soffit. Sash windows with glazing bars and gauged brick heads. Symmetrical 4-bay front. The doors sit under a large gabled porch with arched front and sides containing fretted decoration.
The inset picture of Ellen was taken in her later years, and quite possibly at the rear of Vine Cottage.
