In July, 2002, The Chesterton Duneland Chamber of Commerce honoured Joan and Loren Knibbs with the Senior Award at one of their banquets. The Knibbs, retired to the Duneland area of Indiana, USA, and became active volunteers in a variety of community services, including the Westchester Neighbours Food Pantry, the Duneland Resale Shop and the Medical Closet, a free medical equipment loan project they organized.

The Duneland Medical Equipment Loan Closet is open for residents of the Duneland Community. Anyone living in Westchester, Liberty, Jackson or Pine Townships may use the equipment for up to three months. To date the closet has walkers, a wheelchair, commode, crutches and canes. "We will not be carrying hospital beds because of insurance liabilities" said Joan Knibbs, founder of the organization.

According to Knibbs, Michigan City has had an organization providing this type of service since 1935. Its volunteers have been a help in getting the local organization up and running. "Our equipment is given to us and then we recycle it" Knibbs said. "We would welcome any equipment you have in your attic, garage or basement." she added.
