Notes for Thomas DEAN:

Thomas worked for the LNWR and was killed in a shunting accident at Chalk Farm, Just North of Paddington. Whilst I was told he died in 1862, I've conjectured he died, aged 36, during q1/1868 in the Pancras District of London, which happens to be the district where his youngest daughter, Annie Victoria was born.

Notes for Julia Ann MORETON:

Also known as: Juliana

Julia was the daughter of Ezekial Lofty Moreton and his wife Sophia Bassill who married on 8 Jun 1824, St Matthew's Church, Bethnal Green, Middlesex. I believe there were 13 children altogether:
Isabella, Emma, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Julia Ann, Ann(e) or Anna, Hannah, William, Sophia, John (Thomas), Charlotte Amelia and Margaret (Mary) Frances.

Ezekiel was born in April 1798 in Bedford, Bedfordshire to William Moreton and his wife Mary.

__________

Jullia had seven children with her first husband Thomas Dean. They were Emily Eleanor Ashwell (b.q4/1856), Thomas Henry Ashwell b.Nov1858), Alice Eliza (b.q2/1860), William George, Rosetta Harriett (b.q4/1863), Ellen Julia and Annie Victoria.
__________

Soon after the death of her second husband, William Lutter, Julia travelled to the US as Julia Lutter in 1888 at the age of 55, aboard the ship Tower Hill. She gave Hazardville, Connecticut as her final destination, which was where her youngest daughter Annie Victoria was living.
It was after this that she met James Knibbs and married him.

The 1900 US Federal Census shows that Julia had 5 surviving children. It also shows that she was born in England and emigrated to the US in 1888.
__________

Julia's second husband, William Lutter, died at the end of 1887/beginning of 1888, and we know that Julia arrived in America in 1888. We believe she emigrated to be with her daughter Annie Victoria Dean.
Annie had left England for America with her then fiance, Richard William May and his parents to settle in Hazardville. Both Richard and his father had experience of working in a gunpowder mill in Feltham, Middlesex, and had perhaps heard of the opportunities to be had in the Hazard Powder Mill in Hazardville, Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.

Julia's daughter, Annie Victoria returned with Richard May to England in 1884 where they married in Brentford, Middlesex and then returned to Hazardville. They had three children, Reginald C (b.1883), Frederick (b.1885), and Dorothy Dean May (b.1894). Richard gave his occupation as Gunpowder Maker on the passenger list in 1894 when returning from England to the US.

Two of Julia's other daughters joined them in the US. Her daughter Emily Eleanor Ashwell Dean married a man named Edward Garrard, settling in the general area of Hartford County. Another daughter, Alice Eliza Dean married a man named George Henry Shipway who also joined them in the same location.
Alice and George Shipway later returned to live in England, but Emily and Edward Garrard remained in the US.
__________

We can see a record of Julia having travelled back to England at around 1900 or 1901. The record of her return journey is shown at the Ellis Island database. On 10 March 1901, she arrived at New York aboard the vessel 'Germanic' from Liverpool, England. It appears that she was travelling alone. Her end destination was identified as Unionville, Hartford County, Connecticut, where it states she would be joining her husband James.
__________

It is a fairly safe conjecture that Julia died in 1904. The Connecticut Deaths and Burials, 1772-1934 list the following:
Name Julia Knibbs
Event Type Death
Event Date 1904
Event Place Hartford, Connecticut, United States
Spouse's Name Marten

The spouse's name is confusing, but I'm not aware of any other Julia Knibbs in Hartford County.

__________

The only dates I've found for the birth of Annie were from the 1900 US Federal Census which gives it as May, 1867, and her passport application which gives May 1866,
__________

I am told that Annie left England for America prior to 1884 with her then fiancé, Richard William May and his parents to settle in Hazardville. Both Richard and his father had experience of working in a gunpowder mill in Feltham, Middlesex, and had perhaps heard of the opportunities to be had in the Hazard Powder Mill in Hazardville, Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.

Annie returned with Richard May (born during q3/1862 in the Brentford District, Middlesex) to England in 1884 where they married in Brentford, Middlesex during q1/1884 and then returned to Hazardville. They had three children, Reginald C (b.1883), Frederick George (b.1885), and Dorothy Dean May (b.1894).

__________

Annie's husband Richard died in a tragic explosion at the Hazardville Powder Company on 19 June 1897.:

From the Hartford Courant, 19 Jun 1897:
POWDER MILL EXPLOSION,
THREE MEN AND ONE HORSE KILLED AT HAZARDVILLE,
The company's Official Statement -
Financial Loss $5,000 - The Men Were in the Wheel Room of the Corning Mill.
Hazardville, June 18.—A terrific explosion shook this and surrounding communities at 1:20 this afternoon. Every one knew it was at the plant of the Hazard Powder Company and people hurried terror stricken toward this place after they saw there were. to be no more explosions. Three men and one horse had been killed. The dead are: Richard May, workman, D. B. Stratton, head mechanic; M. W. Pierce, overseer of mills. Two of the men were married and had families.
No one will ever know what caused the explosion. Late this afternoon the officials of the company authorized the following official statement of the explosion:
"At 1:20 this afternoon a corning mill was blown to pieces and three men were killed. The money damage amounts to about $5,000. The men were in the wheel room and their bodies were thrown distances varying from 25 to 100 feet, but the remains were only slightly mutilated. M. W. Pierce leaves a wife and two children; Richard May a wife and two children; H. S. Stratton was unmarried. The mill was not In operation at the time of the explosion. This building has been used as a corning mill for thirty years." Work was suspended for the rest of the afternoon, and the bodies of the victims were tenderly cared for. The entire village had rushed to the scene and harrowing scenes were enacted when members of the bereaved families learned the truth.
Every window light in the vicinity was broken and many in the village were also shattered. Buildings adjacent suffered from the damage, but none of them caught fire.
This is the second explosion which has occurred at this plant within a year. Early on the morning of September 19 last, during an unusually heavy thunder storm, one of the crackers was struck by lightning, and a vast quantity of powder was exploded. The employees had not come to work at that hour, however, and there were no fatalities.
