I understand from Richard Carr, a direct descendant of Lionel's father, that Lionel died in a tragic accident whilst rowing a boat on the Thames, off Gravesend, Kent. It was a warm day and he stood up in the boat to change. A wave from a ship's wake is believed to have unbalanced him and he fell in. His body was recovered downstream a few days later.
