Notes for Rozanne Harriet KNIBBS:

Rozanne was the daughter of Charles Knibbs and Mariette Levillain. Charles brought Mariette to London to have their baby, and when the baby was registered, they gave the name of Charles' legal wife as her mother. We don't yet fully understand why they came to England for the birth, but maybe, in a troubled Europe, an English birth and birth certificate was seen by Charles and Mariette as a means of providing security for their daughter in the event of more troubles in Europe like those they experienced in the Great War of 1914-18? If so, they couldn't have been more right.

Rozanne's birth certificate identifies that she was born in the Middlesex Hospital, Marylebone, London, England and registered on 16 Dec 1923 by her father Charles Knibbs of 57 Darnley Road, Hackney, Middlesex, two days after she was born. Charles gave his wife's name, Alexandra Knibbs (formerly Frogley) as her mother.

See Rozanne's Birth Certificate

Rozanne was raised in Rouen, France. At the age of 11, she came to England and I'm told her English even at that age was very good. She lived close to Rouen until 1939 when she was sent to England before France was occupied by the German army in WWII. She took a job in a cinemas as an usherette and projectionist. During this time, she also met up with her cousin Katherine Wykes and they became great friends. Kittie recalls that Rozanne was a projectionist at a big cinema on the corner of Oxford street called The Marble Arch Pavilion.

For the duration of the war, Rozanne remained in England where she met and married Richard James Martell who was in the US military, serving in the UK. At the end of the war, she returned to live with him in Massachusetts, USA where they had three children, Linda, Gary and Paul.
