"Extract from: 'Oxfordshire Yeomanry' by David Eddershaw.
Surely the longest continual service must belong to William Knibbs of Deddington, a saddler, who enrolled when the first troops were formed in 1798 and had achieved the rank of Troop Sergeant Major by the time of his death in 1853 at the age of 75. Several other members of the Knibbs family were also long-serving members. Information found on the Oxfordshire Yeomanry web site shows Sergeant Knibbs Wm. from Deddington, enrolled 23 July 1798.
__________

There is a William Knibbs listed in the Pigot's 1830 Directory (Page 645 under Deddington) under Shopkeepers & Traders as a saddler & harness maker. I believe this is most likely to be this William, but recognizing there was one other William Knibbs in Deddington at this time.
__________

Listed in the 1841 census for Central, South and East Oxfordshire as living at Deddington with his wife Mary.
__________

William is listed in Pigot's Directory as a Saddle and Harness maker at Deddington, Oxfordshire in 1844
__________

In the 1851 census William Knibbs and his wife Mary are living in the house to the south of The Crown & Tuns Inn in New Street, Deddington, Oxfordshire:
William Knibbs Head Mar 73 Saddler Oxon Middle Barton
Mary Knibbs Wife Mar 64 Oxon Deddington
William Rogers Journeyman Unm 20 Saddler Oxon Bloxham
__________

From the diaries of the Rev. Cotton Risley:

7th November 1841 - Sunday, a most beautiful day, very good congregations. W Knibbs did not appear in the gallery having been requested not to do so by me, in consequence of the other singers having complained of his unmusical and loud voice. Regretted very much being obliged to speak to him, but had no alternative.

17th December 1847 - We left Torquay at 9 o'clock this morning and arrived at home here safely by half past 7 o'clock from Oxford. W. Knibbs came to get a search warrant signed, etc.,.

I suspect that the latter activity was in his capacity of Yeoman of the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars. Yeomen were involved in the establishment of order in the rural society.
