The following is an extract from an article written by Thomas's daughter Iris for "A History of the Mumbles".
For those who don't know it, Mumbles (Mwmbwls in Welsh) is a small fishing village situated at the Western end of Swansea Bay, at the entrance to The Gower Peninsula. Currently well known as the birthplace of Catherine Zeta Jones and Ian Hislop, Mumbles was previously a frequent haunt of Dylan Thomas and his friends.

In 1902, Thomas become valet to a man named Graham Vivian, aged 75, at Clyne Castle, at Blackpill, Swansea, Wales. Mr Vivian collected fine art and regularly travelled to the Continent. As his personal valet Thomas was on duty twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week but during this time, he acquired a real knowledge and love of the fine arts himself which proved invaluable to him in later years.

Graham Vivian had a brother Richard Glynn Vivian who, like his brother was an avid art collector. In 1905, he offered his collection to the Swansea Corporation, together with the sum of £6,000 to build an Art Gallery. After some wrangling, the offer was accepted and Mr Glynn Vivian laid the foundation stone in May 1909, but was to die before the Gallery was opened, in 1911.

At about that time, Thomas married Ethel Zebedee, a Ladies Maid, he'd met in service at Rendcomb Park, Gloucester. A caretaker was needed for the new Gallery, and he saw his chance to get away from valeting and to look after the art treasures of the Vivian family. Out of 307 applicants, Thomas got the job which included rent-free accommodation in a flat beneath the art gallery, free light and coal, and 22 shillings a week.
During his years as Caretaker, he oversaw 250 Exhibitions.
