From the Sheffield Daily Telegraph - 08 October 1926: A PRAYER ANSWERED.
New Spiritualists in Sheffield Fail to Agree.
The story of a split among newly-formed body of Spiritualists was disclosed in a case at Sheffield County Court yesterday, when Judge Lias heard action by James Augustus Webb, tram-driver, of 7, Bloor Street, Walkley. and George Mason, foreman, of 60, Dodd Street, Sheffield, against (George William Green, steelworker, of 5/11. Holme Lane, Sheffield, for the return of goods, including chairs and hymn books, or their value, £4O.
The claim, explained Mr. Lambert, arose out of set of circumstances which, to say the least, were unfortunate. In July, 1924, five gentlemen formed themselves into what became the Douglas Road Spiritual Mission, and took a room in Douglas Road. The landlord required an individual to guarantee the rent, and it was agreed that Green should have his name in the rent book. Certain difficulties, however, arose. Green became too overhearing, and took matters too much into his own hands.
In October Green locked up the mission and would not let anybody there. Letters passed, and eventually the mission was reopened.
After a short time, and without getting the permission of the committee, Green removed the furniture to another building in Langsett Road, and then set up a rival mission. Webb went to a good deal of expense in replacing the furniture, and the mission in Douglas Road was still being conducted. The respondent, in evidence, said that some of the members of tho congregation expressed a desire for the mission be held on other premises. It was announced nightly for a month that thev were moving to new premises.
His Honour: Have you prayed for guidance in this case?
Green: I have. sir.
Did you get any?: - Yes. sir.
His Honour said considered that the arrangements on both sides had been very irregular. He could not hold that the plaintiffs had made out their claim, and be gave judgment for the respondent.
