From the Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette - 14 March 1924:
CIPPENHAM
RETIRED CLERK'S SUDDEN DEATH - At Broom Cottage, Cippenham-lane, Cippenham, on Wednesday morning, the Coroner, Mr. A. E. W. Charsley, held an inquest on the body of Harold Thomas Roberts. aged 62, a retired War Office clerk, of Broom Cottage.—John Turner Roberts, brother of the deceased, deposed that he saw him last in May, when he was not in strong health. He had since received a letter from him every fortnight, and in none of them was there any complaint. The last one, which be received about Feb. 19th, was written cheerfully. He did not think there had been any foul play, or that it was a case of suicide.— Maurice Theodore Knibbs, a painter, of The Brooms, Cippenham-lane, Cippenham, said deceased had rented rooms from him since September last. He did no work, and what meals he had at home he prepared for himself in his front bedroom. During the past fortnight he had complained about his chest. He called witness to his bedroom 9-40 a.m. on Sunday, when he was lying in bed. He said, " I do feel queer; would you mind running into Slough and getting me something from the chemists' " Witness cycled into Chalvey and obtained a bottle of medicine, gave him a dose, and advised him, if he did not get any better, to see a doctor. Deceased said he would do so, but that he would try and get some sleep first. Witness went out, and when he returned about 2 p.m., his wife said she had not heard any more of Mr. Roberts, and wondered whether be was all right. Witness went to his bedroom and found he was dead.—Dr. Herbert Fraser, of Slough, who had attended the deceased once or twice, said a post mortem examination showed that deceased had extensive consolidation of the left lung, while the aortic valve of the heart was diseased. The cause of death was the heart trouble, which was aggravated by recent inflammation of the lung.--A verdict of Death front natural causes was returned.
