Notes for George KNIBBS:

James and his brother George were just two of 118,000 children of all ages who were shipped across Canada to be used as indentured farm workers and domestics. Believed by Canadians to be orphans, only two percent truly were. These children were sent to Canada by over 50 organizations including the well-known and still working charities: Barnardo’s, The Salvation Army and Quarrier’s, to name a few.
See the British Home Children web pages which bring the true stories of the British Home Children to light, in order to maintain their memory and to reunite the families separated during the child migrant scheme.

On 14 May, 1920, the ship Minnedosa set sail from Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada, with 94 children between the ages of 5 and 17 years. Their final destination was Halifax, Novia Scotia. The Canadian immigration forms for George & James noted that Middlemore Homes of Birmingham and Halifax Nova Scotia paid their fares for the above voyage, and the passenger record says "Waifs and Strays" at the top.
