Arthur always went by the name of 'Ron' . He was a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (F.I.Mech E.) and was a Chief Design Engineer and Director at Courtaulds Ltd., Foleshill, Coventry. He worked his way up from Bobbin Boy to Director at Courtaulds during a lifetime of service.

In 1958, he was a joint inventor of an apparatus for securing and positively locating a spinning jet, for use in the production of artificial filaments by the wet spinning process.

From the Coventry Evening Telegraph - 18 January 1977:
The new manager of the production engineering is Mr George Sidwell (54) of Nuneaton. He has for the past six years been assistant to Mr A. R. Knibbs, who he succeeds as manager on Mr Knibbs's appointment to the board of Courtaulds Engineering. Mr Knibbs retains overall responsibility for production engineering.
Mr Sidwell joined Courtaulds in 1948 and has spent most of his time with engineering headuarters and Courtaulds Engineering apart for three years as a senior engineer with the viscose division.
