Marriage Notes for Edwin William KNIBBS\Hannah WATERHOUSE:

Notes for Edwin William KNIBBS:

Edwin was baptised at St. Dunstan, Stepney, London, England and can be seen living there between 1837-1844.

It seems very likely that it was this Edwin Knibbs we see in 1868, aged 23 years, signing on as crew for the ship "Aura" belonging to a man named A. G. Robinson, under the Master, A. Porter of Bermondsey. The crew of 10 all signed and agreed that they would serve on the Aura for "...voyages between any places in the United Kingdom and the Continent of Europe and lands adjacent including including the Mediterranean, the Baltic and White Seas and the coast of Morocco also in the Home ......???......if Required terminating in the first final delivery of cargo in the United Kingdom, subsequent to the 31st December 1868.

See a copy of the ships "Aggreement and Account of Crew" on which Edwin can be seen listed as an AB (Able Seaman).

The document shows that Edwin had previously served on a ship named "Scotia Dundee" up to 25 August 1868. He joined the "Aura" on 1 October that same year. His pay at that time was £1 2s. per week. He left the "Aura" after just 4 months, on 29 December 1868.

We can see Edwin in 1871 with his wife and daughter Louisa living at 156 St James Road, Bermondsey, Southwark, London:
KNIBBS, Edwin W Head 27 Lighterman Olave Middlesex Mile End
KNIBBS, Hannah Wife 25 Surrey Lambeth
KNIBBS, Louisa Daughter 6 weeks Surrey, Bermondsey

Edwin appears in the 1881 census living at 36 Cranham Rd, Rotherhithe, Surrey, England:
Edwin W. KNIBBS Head M Male 37 Mile End, Middlesex, England Lighterman
Hannah KNIBBS Wife M Female 35 Lambeth, Surrey, England
Louisa M. A. KNIBBS Daur Female 10 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Scholar
Edwin G. KNIBBS Son Male 7 Mile End O T, Middlesex, England Scholar
Elizabeth KNIBBS Daur Female 3 Mile End O T, Middlesex, England
Florence KNIBBS Daur Female 1 Bermondsey, Surrey, England

Edwrad was bound to a Thomas Isherwood Syms for 10 years between 1862 and 12 Mar 1872.

We can see from the 1911 census that Edwin and Hannah had 6 children and only three survived. The 1881 census shows us who four of those children were, so I've speculated that Horace and Alfred were also theirs.

Notes for Hannah WATERHOUSE:

We first see Hannah in 1851 at St Stephens Place, Saint George, Southwark, Surrey:
William Waterhouse Head Mar 39 Stone Mason York
Louisa Waterhouse Wife Mar 36 Buckinghamshire
Sarah Waterhouse Daur 11 Lambeth
James Waterhouse Son 9 Scholar Lambeth
Louisa Waterhouse Daur 7 Scholar Lambeth
Hannah Waterhouse Daur 5 Scholar Lambeth
Samuel Waterhouse Son 2 Soiuthwark/Bow
Ann Bishop Lodger Mar 66 Kent Maidstone

Hannah married Edwin in 1870.

Hannah can be seen at the 1891 census living at 3 Manley Place, Lambeth, London, England:
Hannah Knibbs Head Wid 45 Living on own means London Lambeth
Louisa Knibbs Daughter 20 Milliner London, Bermondsey
Edwin Geo Son 17 Carpenters Apprentice London Mile End
Elizabeth Knibbs Daughter 13 Scholar London Mile End

Hannah can be seen in the 1901 census for England & Wales, "Living on Own Means" at 63 Thanet Road, St Lawrence Intra, Kent. She is living with her daughter Elizabeth then aged 23:
Hannah KNIBBS55 Living on Own Means Blackfriars London
Elizabeth23 Stepney London

St Lawrence Intra was a Civil Parish in the county of Kent, in England. It was created in 1894 and abolished in 1922. It was part of Thanet and Ramsgate.

We can see Hannah in 1911 living at 48 Coldharbour Lane in the district of Camberwell, London. I believe she was probably living on her own but this is confused by the details on the census which gave her relationship to the head of the family as "Mother".
Hannah Knibbs Mother 65 Widow Married (14 years) London Surrey

The census states that she had 6 children, 3 of whom died before 1911.

Whilst not 100% sure, I believe Hannah died in 1925, aged 78.

Notes for Horace James KNIBBS:

I'm not 100% about Horace being the son of Edwin and Hannah so need to check the certificate to confirm. He was certainly born in the right place and at the right time to have been their son.
