Level Crossing Crash: Two Men Hurt
GOODS TRAIN APPROACHING AS CAR HITS GATES
Three men narrowly escaped death this morning when their estate car crashed Into level crossing safes at Yelvertoft Station. near Rugby. as a goods train came rumbling by. It is believed that the car's brakes failed after passing through flood water about a mile from the gates. The injured, taken to the Hospital of St. Cross. Rugby, were Mr. Percy Knibbs (40), of 27, Derwent-drive, Kings Heath, Northampton, chest injury and lacerations to head, and Mr. William Clifton (41), of 3, Countess-road, Northampton. head injuries, and fractured arm and wrist, who were both detained. The other injured man, who was treated for a cut lip was Mr. W. T. Bales of Yelvertoft. The accident was seen by district relief stationmaster Mr. Edward Lloyd, of Allwell House, Clifton who was on duty In the signal box beside the gates.
He told The Evening Mall that about five minutes after he had closed the gates for the 720 Welford to Rugby goods train, he heard the car approaching from Clay Coton.
Tended infured
As he looked out of the side window of the signal box he saw the car crash into the gates. Then the train came by. "I dashed from the signal box." said Mr. Lloyd, and with Station porter Mr. B. Faulkner, of Market Harborough. attended to the Injured and phoned the police and ambulance. It was only two iron bars that prevented the car from crashing into the path of the train The force of the impact smashed the wooden sections of the gate and bent the iron bars. The estate car come from Coton, where the road was flooded for about 30 yards.
