I believe it is Katherine we can see at the 1880 census, living at Crossley Orphan Home & School, Savile Park, Skircoat, York, England. She was identified as an Orphan. There were 25 children registered at the orphanage, all aged between 13 and 16 years. There were no others with the same surname so I presume it was just Katherine from her family.

Wilfred joined the Merchant Navy as an Assistant Steward in 1918, when he was just 16. He served on the ships Ninian in 1918, Bahia Castillo in 1920, and Pakeha in 1921.

SS Pakeha served on the Liverpool to Wellington, NZ, service in 1910. She carried 1,000 passengers in steerage, and was a frozen meat carrier.

We can see Wilfred on a ship named "Manitou" of the Atlantic Transport Lines, when it arrived in New York from London in July 1919. He was was working an Assistant Steward. He was identified as 5'6" tall and 10st 6lbs in weight, with a scar on his back.
