Balliol College Once Owned The White Heart
Standing on top of Ufton hill, overlooking the Avon valley below, is The White Heart Inn about five miles from Leamington. The atmousphere is friendly. It is owned by Messrs. Thornleys, of Leamington Spa.
Here again the oak beams in this 14th Century house are most conspicuous, and while the place retains much that is antique, it has been modernised during the past few years. Mr and Mrs. A. R. Finch are the popular managers. Their visitors come from almost every pert of the county. They have been here for the past 11 years.
THEIR PREDECESSORS
Their predecessors, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Downing were the tenants for very many years. In fact Mr. Downing was resident first. as a member of the family when his father kept the house and later he took over with his wife. Mr. Fred Downing died in the village at 78 years of age. but his widow is still living. Aged 87. She resides with a son in Sheffield.
For generations the whole of the village of Litton was owned by Trustees of Balliol College, Oxford, and it is said that rent from the parish went towards educating the sons of ministers. At that time The White Heart was owned by Balliol College and it is not long since Thornleys became the owners.
It is also interesting to note that Graham, the eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Finch was the first for 100 years to be born at this Inn.
While here, I chatted with a grand old man who certainly belied his 84 years, Mr. Fred Gamage (pictured). He was born in the village and has spent most of his life there. He now resides at the Bungalow, Ufton, and had cycled to the inn for his usual bottle of stout. In fact, up to a short time ago, it was usual for him to cycle to and from Coventry several times a week.
STILL CLIMES A LADDER
He certainly is most active and alert and I was told by his nephew that he can still climb a decent-sized ladder. Only the other day he had concreted 135 yards of path for a local doctor.
He told me that when he started work In the village, which at that time did not have more than 120 people living there, he received six-pence a week and he was nine years of age. Later he went into service and received £4 per year and lived in. In those days. before eating he had to walk two miles each way to milk eight cows before he was allowed to have his breakfast.
Mr Gamage also informed me that when a youth he remembered the local Rector. the Rev. George Frederick Clark poisoning himself after he had been rector for 25 years. Later there was a sale of the Rector's furniture and effects and he and Mr. Fred Downing each held a horse while their owners were at the sale for most of the day - and gladly received sixpence each.
IN FATHER'S ARMS Asked how long he had been going to the White Heart. Mr. Gamage replied: "I was taken in my father's arms and I have been going ever since."
Just outside the Inn are the old worn-out stocks, and I could not resist having a look inside the old church, which goes back to the 13th century. I found a simple stone coffin for a child resting on a windowsill and a beautiful brass plaque to the Morley family. which indicated their acts of kindness and generosity for over 200 yearns.
There was also a tribute to Robert Field. a faithful labourer, who for good deeds won two prizes of the Royal Agricultural Society. and was crushed by a steam windlass.
