Marriage Notes for William Edward BELKNAP\Elizabeth Ann KNIBBS:

I've not found details of a marriage between William and Elizabeth, but the 1900 census return shows Rosomond Belknap living with grandparents, Cornelius and Rosamond Knibbs at Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

I also understand from Andrew Bruns, whose wife is a great-granddaughter of William and Eizabeth that family memories and bible notations that Cornelius introduced William to Elizabeth some time between 1880-1883 at a church function, and they married in 1883 (quite probably on 8 October), in Athens, Pennsylvania.

Notes for William Edward BELKNAP:

I haven't found details of this marriage as yet, but we can see quite clearly in the 1900 census return that there was a young girl named Rosomond Belknap living with her grandparents, Cornelius and Rosamond Knibbs at Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Cornelius had just one daughter, so we can assume Rosomond was hers.
__________

We first see William (listed as Edward) in 1865, living at New Windsor, Orange, New York:
Israel Belknap Head Mar 30 Farmer Orange
Sarah E Belknap Wife 30 Orange
Sarah F Belknap Daur 5 Orange
Mary A Belknap Daur 4 Orange
Maria D Belknap Daur 2 Orange
Edward Belknap Son 11 months Orange
__________

In 1870, we see that William was the son of Israel Belknap (35 years) and his wife Sarah (25 years), and had the following siblings: Sarah, Mary, Maria, William, Delia and Channcey.
Israel Bellknap Head 35 Farmer New York
Sarah E Bellknap Wife 35 Keeping House
Sarah F Bellknap Daughter 12 New York
Mary A Bellknap Daughter 10 New York
Maria D Bellknap Daughter 8 New York
William E Bellknap Son 6 New York
Delia Bellknap Daughter 2 New York
Channcey G Bellknap Son 11 months New York

Sarah's maiden name was Denniston. She and Israel married on 18 November, 1857 at Little Britain, Orange County, New York.
__________

In 1880, the family was living at Marlborough, Ulster, New York:
Israel Belknap Head Mar 45 Farm Labourer New York
Sarah E Belknap Wife Mar 45 New York
Mary A Belknap Daughter 20 New York
William E Belknap Son 15 Farm Labourer New York
Delia H Belknap Daughter 12 New York
Chancy Y Belknap Son 10 New York
Joseph F Belknap Son 8 New York
Susie C Belknap Daughter 4 New York
__________

I understand from Andrew Bruns, whose wife is a great granddaughter of William and Elizabeth, that Elizabeth's fatherm Cornelius Knibbs, worked with William at Union Bridge/American Bridge Company in Athens, Pennsylvania. William may have worked for Cornelius. Cornelius introduced Elizabeth to William sometime between 1880-1883 at a church function. William and Elizabeth married in 1883 (probably on 8 Oct) in Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He was 20 and she was 19. They moved to Elmira, New York (20 miles north of Athens) in late 1889 to continue his employment at another American Bridge manufacturing site. They had 8 children. He retired due to illness in 1923 after 43 years. His last position was Plant Foreman. They remained in Elmira until they passed. Elizabeth was born Sept 1864, probably on the 12th. Records reflect that she was born in New York state. Her parents lived in Schenectady, NY long before she was born until they moved to Athens Penn in 1880. She and her brother moved with them. So she likely was born in Schenectady.
__________

From the census return for the inhabitants of New York taken on Feb 1892, we see the following:
Wm E Belknapp M 29 US Labourer
Elizebith Belknapp F 27 US
Rosemond Belknapp F 8 US
Wm E Belknapp M 5 US
Gertrude Belknapp F 3 US
Cornelias Belknapp M 1 US
__________

In 1900 we also see the following entry for William Belknap and his family, living at 102 East Miller Street, Elmira City, Elmira Town, Chemung, New York:
William E Belknap, Head, Married 17 years, June 1863, New York, Stationary Engineer
Elizabeth A Belknap, Wife, Married 17 years, Sept 1865, New York
Rosomond Belknap, Daugh, 0ct 1884, New York
William E Jr. Belknap, Son, Sept 1887, Pennsylvania
Gertrude F Belknap, Daugh, June 1889, Pennsylvania
Cornelius Belknap, Son, Nov 1891, New York
Joseph H Belknap, Son, April 1894, New York
Harrison L Belknap, Son, Oct 1896, New York

Elizabeth had 7 children, 6 of whom survived.

However, we also see from the 1900 census at Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Knibbs Cornelius Head 66 Labourer (Bridge Co.) England
Knibbs Rosamond C Wife 62 Pennsylvania
Belknap Rosamond G.Daughter 15 Pennsylvania

So from this, it appears that William's daughter Rosamond was staying with grandparents.
