Notes for Edith Nancy MCCARTNEY:

Cathy Cliff, Edith's granddaughter told me:
Edith married just 6 months after her father died. She and John took in the two youngest children, Leslie and Fred. She was the big sister and gave care to many of her siblings as well as her mother.

They moved from the log house into the middle house in 1914 just before Evelyn was born in 1915. Edith said she would no longer camp! The middle house was built on the same location as the big house and had to be moved to dig the basement for the bigger house. The new house (current farm house) was built in 1925. Lex Richardson was the son of Mrs Smith -- a relative of some sort. Lex was born in Texas and was blind. John Hackett felt sorry for him and let him stay in their house. This would have been between 1915 and 1925. John added a lean-to room on to the middle house for Lex to stay in. Margaret liked to tease him and one day he was working with a hammer and he threw it at Margaret. When grandpa got back home, he told Lex they "just couldn't have that" and loaded him up in the buggy
and took him to Frank Garvey's on County E. Grandpa told Frank that Lex should get along better there because they had no children. Grandpa John had children and couldn't allow those things to happen.
