On 10 April, 1881, there is a record of a Knibbs child having died aged just 21 months and 15 days. All we know is that the child had the surname Knibbs, was born in Vienna Township, Illinois and is buried at Ward cemetery. Given that Charles wife Jane would have been in her early 50's at that time, I doubt that this was a child of Charles and Jane, but almost certainly, living in that area, the child would have been related somehow.

I suspect that it is Charles Knibbs, his wife Jane and members of their respective families who are listed as members of the Ebenezer Church congregation. It was the Primitive Baptist Church located about a mile and a half from Verona, Grundy County, Illinois and was used between 1850-1898. Certainly, Knibbs and Rumney are two of the several surnames of people who were members there.

We learn from the The Metcalfs, Lotts and Rumneys Book that Jane is the daughter of James Rumney, born 8 Jan 1794 Kent, England. His first wife was Judith Goodyear. The IGI has it that they married 16 Sep 1815 at Strood near Rochester, Kent, England. He died 23 Sep 1853 of a hernia at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY and is buried at the Protestant cemetery in Niagara Falls.

Judith Goodyear was born c.1797 Kent, England died 19 Jan 1830 Kent, England. James and Judith had seven children.

James second wife was Mary Rockliffe Winch. They married 9 Jan 1831 at Rochester, Saint Nicholas, Kent, England. James and Mary had six children.

Obituaries of Jane Ashfield Rumney

Died, October 21st, 1895, at the residence of George Knibbs, Mrs. Jane Knibbs, of Vernon (Verona), Illinois, aged about seventy years. She had been visiting at the residence of her son, George, in Salt Springs Township, Greenwood County, Kansas, for the past six months.
Mrs. Jane Knibbs was born in England and moved to the United States when a little girl. Of a family of seven children only three sons survive her, George Knibbs of this county, C. C. Knibbs of Orchard, Nebraska, and J. D. Knibbs of Vernon (Verona), Illinois. The deceased died of dropsy having been a sufferer for several years.
The remains was on Wednesday shipped to Vernon (Verona), Illinois where they will be interred with the husband and children.

An old resident of Grundy County departed this life Oct. 21 - died at the home of her eldest son George in Greenwood County, Kansas. Her remains were brought to her old home.
Jane Ashfield Rumney was born at Frensburg, county of Kent, England, Oct. 19, 1826; came to the United States in 1851; was married to Charles Knibbs in 1852. Her husband died in 1886. She was the mother of seven children, four of them, three sons and one daughter preceding her to the grave, leaving three sons, and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Her funeral was held at her old home and conducted by Elder S. Bradbeer and Elder Haines. Her remains were laid beside her husband and children in Ward cemetery.

It's so frustrating! I came across the following posting on the internet from a lady named Betty Jo Griffith. Sadly she posted it in 1998 and I didn't find it until 2007, by which time, her email had changed:

Emmigrated from London, Sunday 21 Apr 1850, from St. Catherines' Dock to Grave's End. On Monday 22 Apr 1850 they left for America. arrived in Ny on Saturday 28 May 1850 and made their way to Niagra Falls, NY. In 1853 James died and the following spring his family moved to Adams Twp, LaSalle Co.,Il. on land that James had purchased before he died.

James's father lived with him in Kent, Eng and died ca 1840. How do I find information on his death and who his wife was? Frindsbury parish church is mentioned.

Also James had a brother Jacob-never married-and a sister Dorothy who married a Dolton and emmigrated to Australia.

Looking at the records available at Castle Garden web site, and also the passenger list for the Henry, I believe they travelled on the ship "Henry" which arrived in New York on 27 May 1850.

However, the only names I could see were James himself (57), Mary his wife (47), and presumably 4 of his children, Ann (5), Martha (10), Robert (19) and William (15). We do know from the Rumney web site that James and Mary Rumney (his second wife) had 6 children, and the names and ages of Ann, Martha, Robert and William all match up with the names and ages of 4 of those children.

Neither Jane nor any of the other children from his first marriage appear in the passenger list, however, the records on the IGI indicate that the children would all have been aged between 24 and 34 years of age. Jane herself would have been the youngest, aged 24, so I wonder if she travelled to the US on her own. One of her obituaries says that she emigrated to the US as a young girl but I wonder if that is correct.

As a possibility, we can see that just over a year later, on 5 Jul 1851, the same ship "Henry" arrived at NY with a passenger named Jane ROWNEY aged 23 years, so, I wonder if that was possibly her joining the family once they'd settled?

Rumney Family Gathered Southeast of Leland; 126 Attend.

The annual family reunion of the .descendants of James Runmey was held at the Andrew Rumney home southeast in Leland Sunday. The Rumneys are well and favorably known, having established their first home near Leland in 1853. James Rumny and family left their home in West Kent, England on April 19, 1850, leaving London from the St. Catherine docks going down the Thames river about 20 miles to Graves, England, and on Monday, April 22, started for America, going through the English channel. For three weeks they never sighted a vessel. They arrived In New York .Saturday, May 28, taking five weeks to cross the ocean. The following Monday they took a steamboat up the Hudson river to Albany, from there taking a canal boat to Buffalo. This trip took them 18 days. At this point a man was hired with a team to take them to Niagara Falls, arriving there about July 1, 1860. They resided thre until the summer of 1883 when they came to Illinois and purchased 80 acres of land in Adams township, six miles southeast of Leland. This was the 14th reunion. There were 126 relatives and two visitors present. The oldest member .of the family attending was Mrs. Celia Brayton of Aurora; the youngest member was Anna Louise, the four month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Lee, of Mazon. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Finch, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sutton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Motter and family, Fred Finch, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Knibbs and sons, Mr. and Mrs. John Finch and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ward, Mrs. Louise Ward, Mrs. Howard Finch, Mr. and Mrs. George Finch and sons, of Verona.

NOTE: the Mr. and Mrs. George Knibbs and sons who attended were George Garold Knibbs, his wife Helen June (nee Kinsey) and sons John Garold and Robert George Knibbs.
