From the Farmington Valley Herald, March 6th , 1914:
HUNTING for EGG-MASSES.
By Milton Knibbs, Unionville.
One night when my father and mother came home from the Grange they told me the Grange offered a prize to the one who got the most caterpillar egg masses. So the next morning I started getting tent caterpillar egg masses. The tent caterpillars are very harmful to the trees, especially in Connecticut. There will not be many on the trees next year, as the children in the schools are very much interested in getting tent caterpillar egg masses Our school, the West District school of Farmington, has had the best attendance for three months. It has grades 1 to 6, all in one room. We have now 15,916 egg masses in our school. Most all of the tent caterpillars I picked were on apple trees and wild cherry trees. I like to pick the egg masses because we have so much fun. I write this, not because I expect to win a prize, but to show you that I am very much interested in it.
