Notes for Elijah ROBERTS:

Details from the 1880 US Census states that Elijah Roberts came to America from England. There's one Elijah ROBERTS being born at the right time, and that was in the 3rd quarter of 1848 in the District of St Austell, Cornwall, England.
Even more interesting, there is a marriage between an Elijah ROBERTS and a Sally RICHARDS in the same District of St Austell, Cornwall, England in the 3rd quarter of 1843.

The 1880 US Federal Census has an Elijah and Sally Roberts living at Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut - so - it is a reasonable assumption that these are the parents of Elijah, and they emigrated as a family when Elijah Jr. was a young boy, between 1849 and 1854.

Whilst I accept this is by no means certain, I consider that the name Sally was fairly uncommon in those days, so I believe to find a Sally and Elijah Roberts in the same area of Cornwall, and then again in Hartford County Connecticut, AND associated with an Elijah Roberts of the right age must surely be more than coincidental.

Assuming therefore that Elijah is the son of Elija and Sally Roberts from St Austell, Cornwall, England, I've managed to find the following information::

In 1851, living at North Street, Tywardreath, Cornwall, England we see the following:
Sally Roberts Head Mar 24 Miners Wife Cornwall Tywardreath
Selina Ann Roberts Daur 7 Scholar Cornwall Tywardreath
Elizth Jane Roberts Daur 5 Scholar Cornwall Tywandreath
Elijah Roberts Son 2 Cornwall Tywardreath
Elizth Martin Sister Mar 22 Miners Wife Cornwall Breage
Mary Ann Martin Niece 3 Scholar Cornwall Tywardreath
Maria Ellen Martin 7 mnt Cornwall Tywardreath

I note that Sally and her sister Elizabeth were both listed as Miner's Wives, and both husbands seemed to be away from home for the census. Were they perhaps both in the USA seeking a new life for their families? We see from the 1900 US Federal census return that Sally's daughter, Elizabeth Jane, gave the years of 1851 for her year of immigration into America.
