Valentine Service Offers Serenade
STORRS — At the University of Connecticut, hearts and flowers will be passed for some valentines, who will take it on the chin instead.
Russell C, a UConn dorm, has devised a kind of Rent-A-Valentine program, the star of which is David Knibbs, a UConn junior from Bristol.
Dressed as "Chinman," Knibbs will serenade unsuspecting students on campus for a small fee. Knibbs covers his face from his nose up leaving his mouth exposed, pastes two paper eyes on his chin and his beard becomes "Chinman's" hair.
A stuffed doll's body, clad in short red pants with a red heart on its white chest, is attached to the covered up part of Knibbs. face so the whole thing looks like a miniature man with an oversized mouth.
The mouth is critical. since "Chinman" will sing a funny love song to anyone's valentine for $1.50.
"Chinman" performs by flopping upside down on a chair, so his paper eyes and "hair" are on top and his cupid body hangs to the floor. Two large red tennis shoes stretching from the ends of the stuffed white legs complete "Chinman's" attire.
Knibbs' own body is wrapped in a blanket, his feet hanging over the chair back, so that the audience won't be distracted from focusing on "Chinman."
He'll be accompanied by his "manager" and fellow student, Keith Wilcox, who will help him set up in front of a closed door before he entertains the surprised recipient.
The dorm also will deliver flowers, candy and cards on campus for 50 cents. Other acts available are a student folk singing trio plus one student who will sing a love aria from an Italian opera for anyone willing to pay the price.
The dorm advertised its "valentine serenading service," in the student newspaper and received about 20 calls to deliver messages, presents and to sing songs.
"Chinman" Is the service most in demand, with more than half the callers requesting him to serenade other students.
He'll also surprise an unsuspecting professor's wife who plans to meet her husband today for a quiet romantic luncheon in his office.
Other subscribers to the serenade service have asked that old-fashioned love songs be delivered to their valentines and one person specified "My Wild Irish Rose" should be sung.
The dorm will use the profits from the delivery service for beer parties at which "Chipman" apparently entertains frequently, dressed as other different characters.
"You should have seen him Halloween; he was a great Wolfchin, especially when he ate his 'eyeball'," one student said.

Backgammon Makes Splash in Bristol
BRISTOL—Air bubbles flow rapidly from Dave Knibbs' mouth as he contemplates his next move in a tense backgammon game with Peter Rauert.
Hair standing on end, Rauert sits comfortably on his haunches. arms folded, seep in thought. Knibbs slowly shakes the dice, watching intently as they slowly roll to a halt The two silent players appear oblivious to the encouraging hoots and hollers of, enjoying silence at the bottom of the Bristol Girls. Club pool. Underwater backammon may not be the fad of the Albatross Scuba Club of Plainville beganb an 80-hour tournament to raise money for the Mulsular Dystrophy Association.

David's sister Betty wrote the following poem in his memory:
Dave - In memory of my brother, David R. Knibbs, Ph.D.
He took life by the horns
and shook it to prove
that all that he needed
was to do it - to move.
The gleam of his soul
shone in his eyes....
His heart was as big
as his intellect wise.
The sparkle of life
lived in his smile....
He touched everyone deeply,
if only for a while.
Whoever would have known,
whoever could have guessed
that we would, all too soon,
lose the brightest and best?

From the Rxtra Magazine, a publication for the employees of Hartford Hospital, dated August 26, 2002:
David R. Knibbs, Ph.D, 49, director of Hartford Hospital's Electron Microscope Laboratory, died August 5 at Bristol Hospital. A member of Hartford Hospital's staff from July 1982, Mr. Knibbs joined Hartford Pathology Associates in July 2001, continuing under contract in the position of EM Lab director.
A lifelong Bristol resident, he graduated from Bristol Central High School, received a bachelor?s degree from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree from Central Connecticut State University, and his doctorate in pathobiology from the University of Connecticut. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Hartford.
He was an avid SCUBA diver, recently completing his 100th dive. His love of diving brought him from the shores of Connecticut to the Fiji Islands in search of sunken ships. At his memorial service August 9, friends and family characterized not the sadness of a young life ended early, but the accomplishments of a man who enjoyed life and everyone involved with him. His pastor spoke of Dave's charity to those he knew of only through his church, and how annually, Dave and his two children would personally do a massive grocery shopping before the holidays to ensure those in need in Bristol were taken care of. William Pastuszak, MD, director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, spoke of Dave's professionalism and keen insight into electron microscopy, and Dave's innate ability to brighten up any gathering. Others who eulogized Dave - among whom were his close diving partner, and high school and college teachers - reaffirmed Dave's drive, humor and dedication to anything and anyone who came in touch with him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Knibbs is survived by a son, Christopher and a daughter, Tabatha; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Robert Avolt of Bristol, and Betty and Roger Houle of Bristol; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Tom Clark of Farmington; a special friend, Nancy Muller; and several neices, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, John E. Knibbs.
