Notes for Samuel Duffield MARTIN:

The 1891 census return indicates that Samuel wasn't the son of John and Elizabeth Martin, but their grandson. My belief is that he must have been a son of Alice Martin, born out of wedlock.
__________

We see Samuel in 1881, living in the household of who we now believe to have been his grandparents, John and Elizabeth Martin, living at Hagley Road, Ridgacre, Worcestershire.
John Martin Head Mar 53 Iron Puddler Darlaston Stafford
Elisabeth Martin Wife Mar 50 Banbury Oxford
Clara J Martin Daur Unm 14 Greets Green Stafford
Martha A Martin Daur Unm 12 Scholar Beech Lanes Worcester
Sophia E Martin Daur Unm 9 Scholar Beech Lanes Worcester
James W Martin Son Unm 6 Scholar Beech Lanes Worcester
Samuel D Martin Son Unm Male 4 Beech Lanes Worcester
Joseph Knbbs Father In Law Mar Male 90 Banbury Oxford
Sarah Knibbs Mother In Law Mar 74 Banbury Oxford

Joseph's date of birth is given incorrectly. He was born in 1799, not 1791 so would have been just 82.
__________

The Admissions Register for the Quinton National School 1872-1894 shows the following MARTIN children. Martha has the name of George Martin for a parent. This could be a mistake but it could also mean that she isn't from this family. She was living with them at the 1881 census so I assume it is a mistake.
No. Year Mth Name Born Parent/Guardian Occupation Address
41 1872 6 Martin Martha 7 3 1869 George Martin Forge Man Beech Lanes

__________

The 1891 census return is the first indication that Samuel Duffield Martin was a grandson of John and Elizabeth, and not his son.

__________

I am reliably informed by Jean Lewis, Samuel's grand-daughter, that Samuel married a girl named Nellie Porter in 1902. They had 6 children - 4 girls and 2 boys. Sadly, Samuel died just 2 months before his youngest son was born.
__________

In 1911, we can see Samuel and his family living at Osmonde House, Tanworth Lane, Shirley Heath, Warwickshire:
Samuel Duffield Martin Head 54 Milk Seller Quinton Warwickshire
Nellia Martin Wife 32 Married (10 years) Salty Warwickshire
Nellie E Martin Daughter 8 Smethwick Staffordshire
Elsie W Martin Daughter 6 Smethwick Staffordshire
Florence B Martin Daughter 5 Smethwick Staffordshire
Irene A Martin Daughter 3 Smethwick Staffordshire
Stanley W Martin 2 Tanworth Warwickshire

By 1911, Nellie had 5 children all of whom survived.
__________

Jean writes of Samuel's youngest child, her dad:- "The other children were a lot older than him. Of the four girls, only one married, and an elder brother was sent to live in Australia with relatives when he was in his early teens. He didn't marry either. He had a very good singing voice and made quite a few records (hymns mostly) but at the time of writing we don't have any more information. He came back to England when in his late 70's just before he died to meet his brother and one remaining sister, who has also now died. No-one from that generation remains. As his sisters were so much older he was never included in outings to visit relatives, so had no recollection of having cousins or aunties or uncles. The family moved to Shirley, West Midlands and I think most of the children were born there".
__________

I think Samuel died aged just 46 years old.
