__________

Betty's great-neices, the granddaughters of her sister Harriet, remember visiting Betty and her husband Wilf when they were growing up. Betty was Harriet's favorite sister so they visited her with their Nan quite a lot.
They often stayed to tea aof tinned ham or potted beef sandwiches made with fresh bread that she used to bake herself, and tinned fruit, quite often pineapple chunks. They'd be topped up with Blue Ribbon biscuits from the sideboard.
Betty had been unable to have children herself, so she loved it when they all arrived.

The cottage in High Green had no bathroom and just one sink in the scullery. They did have piped water into the house, but there was still an old well in the garden which had been covered over with a huge boulder. There was a hole in the top of the boulder, just large enough to drop stones down to hear the splash.
There was one main room where they lived and ate, and at the centre was a large round table covered with a long fringed, green chenille cloth. The kitchen contained a huge Victorian range with it's fire always lit. With Wilf being a retired miner, there was always plenty of coal to burn.
There was just one bedroom upstairs, and an outside loo which they had to share with the house next door.
Wilf was a retired coal miner and only had one lung so he couldn't do much. Bending down to put coal on the fire was a big job for him and he had to rest and get his breath back before standing up again.
