Notes for William Jesse THOMAS:

William was manager of the Avalon Theatre in Olympia, Washington.

The Avalon opened in 1928 with "The Winning of Barbara Worth". In 1952, it closed with the double feature of "Ma and Pa Kettle At The Fair" with "The Magic Carpet" and a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Sadly, the theatre is no longer there. The building was used as Griswold's Office Supply store (as shown below) from 1989 until it was destroyed in a blaze on July 31, 2004.

If you look carefully at this picture taken in the building's latter days, you can just make out where the original round windows were before they were bricked up, just below the smaller brick squares. Sadly, I can't find a picture of it in it's former glory.

This original building was sold in 1951. In about 1948 and until about 1951, they acquired the lease to the Liberty cinema and renamed it the Olympic. The site is now the Washington Center for the Performing Arts and contains the Wurlitzer organ that was in the former Liberty.
