Understood from Marina Pauline Knibbs that her aunty Ivy made perfect drop scones every time she baked! However, I was later told by Ivy's daughter Doreen that it was her rock cakes she was really famous for.

Notes for Doreen Margaret HERN:

Doreen emigrated to New Zealand in 1950.

Doreen married Derek Wade Cory-Wright, the son of Harold and Phyllis Cory-Wright on 26 August, 1959. They met when she was at teachers' training college in Wellington. Derek was born on 26 May 1921 in Aukland, and died on 15 Aug 2013 at Tairua.

Derek inherited the family farm at Tairua from his father. His father gave part of his land for community use, including the football field, church, fire station, ambulance and hall at Tairua.

Doreen and Derek had three children, Vivianne, Andrew and Mark.

I'm afraid I've plagerised the following story from a complimentary community magazine called pākuViews and in particular, an article written by Marine Horan, the current owner of the "Cowshed" at Tairua, from a chat with Doreen.

One of Doreen's lasting legacies continues to be enjoyed by thousands of families every year. It started out as a simple cowshed, built at around 1927 on the Cory-Wright cattle farm at Tairua, and was used up until 1967 when Derek and Doreen swapped from milk cows to beef cattle. The cowshed was no longer required and the intention was that it would be demolished.
At the time, the new Kopu-Hikuai Road was due to be opened, bringing much more traffic via Tairua. Doreen and a good friend of hers, Sue Purdon, saw an opportunity to enable them to sell their homemade Arts and Crafts. They set to and converted the old cowshed into a store and after a great deal of hard work, it was opened to the public during Labour Weekend of 1967.
They were later approached by a bus company planning what was described as 'an art trail', suggesting that if Doreen and Sue would prepare morning tea, their new shop would be included as one of the stops. The art trail never did happen but nevertheless, Doreen and Sue thought it a good idea. Local resident Bren Plenda made the necessary alterations and converted the old separator room into a kitchen. For the next nine years, Doreen and Sue sold their crafts from the "Cowshed" and also provided tea, coffee, scones and home baked goodies. Men sat outside reading their newspapers over a cuppa whilst their wives and children browsed the store.
The name "Cowshed" remains synonymous with the building to this day.

Note: The Cowshed is situated at 307 Main Road, Tairua, Coromandel, New Zealand.

For six years, Doreen was president of an organisation called The Tairua Care & Friendship Club. The initial objective was to provide transportation to and from important appointments for the citizens of Tairua who could no longer drive for themselves.
Doreen made a valuable contribution by holding Garden Parties on her property. By 1992 the group had raised $2,000 through these parties, benefit concerts, cake stalls, and craft sales.
With this show of determination, the van fund grew until they had $12,000 and were rewarded with another $25,000 from the Lotto Grants Board. The mobility van was purchased, and another $1000 (courtesy of the Waikato Trust Board) was invested to install a wheel chair lift.
